Spirit Nest by Jayson Fann

The Art of Play
Bernheim Spirit Nest by Jayson Fann
Experience a bird’s eye view of nature when interacting with 25-ft tall Spirit Nest, created by internationally-renowned artist Jayson Fann from Big Sur, California. This uniquely Bernheim art installation is located near the Pines Picnic area in Zone 2 of the newly opened Playcosystem, a 10-acre natural playground. The interactive installation encourages free and adventurous play and doubles as an outdoor education space that brings people together for storytelling, lessons of the natural world and sharing of multi-cultural experiences.

“I want to get young people excited about the world that we live in and passionate about how all things are connected.”
– Jayson Fann

More than an art installation

Fann's work is an experience that fosters connections with nature, environmental stewardship, intercultural literacy, dialogue, and awareness by the incorporation of interactive arts, ecological education and cultural collaborations that embodies sustainability and the ideals of our founder I.W. Bernheim.

Bernheim will work with Jayson to develop a curriculum around the Spirit Nests for outdoor education, programming, and events for families, school groups, members, and the public highlighting the importance of nature and integrating S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) activities.

Jayson Fann’s work will enhance Bernheim’s mission of connecting people to nature through the lens of art, science, and education. A Spirit Nest at Bernheim is the epitome of biomimicry in that it creates solutions to modern-day human challenges by emulating designs and ideas found in nature.

As a significant component to Bernheim’s Playcosystem, the Spirit Nest installation weaves perfectly with our scientific investigations of Golden Eagle research and our Motus Wildlife Tracking System while also complimenting Birds of Bernheim programming developed for children and learners of all ages.

Jayson Fann represents what is exciting and relevant with contemporary sculpture. Bernheim will bring Jayson’s work to Clermont, Ky., and the Greater Louisville region for the first time, keeping Bernheim at the forefront of popularizing public art in Kentucky and increasing the region’s cultural vitality.
