Tourist commission hands out annual grant requests

SHEPHERDSVILLE -— It’s grant season and the Bullitt County Tourism and Convention Commission has voted on where its funds will go in 2019.

The committee consists of chair Gina Carnell (Knob Creek Gun Range), Scott Turner (Bernheim Forest) and tourism chairman James Watkins (Best Made Pallets) serve on the committee, as well as Tourism Director Troy Beam.

Of the $17,200 requested, the committee recommended to the rest of the commission a total of $13,750, leaving $750 in the budget for last minute requests later in the year.

Bernheim Forest received the largest recommendation, receiving $4,000 of the requested $5,000 for the Giants.

The Circle of Peace Gather in Shepherdsville, Active Heroes Veteran Camping Experience, Lebanon Junction’s Wall Street Park Festival, the Queen of the Bluegrass girls basketball competition at Bullitt East, the North Bullitt Lions Demo Derby and ongoing operations for the Bullitt County History Museum all received $1,000 each.

The Kentucky State Sporting Clays Championship from the Jefferson Gun Club, the Boy Scout’s Camp Crooked Creek’s ongoing operations and a project to establish a pollinator habitat at the Bullitt County Welcome Center received $750 each.

The Mount Washington Spring Festival, Hillview City Fair and beautification for Shepherdsville City Park received $500 each.

The recommendation was unanimously approved.

In other business…

-The commission agreed to give a donation to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) in honor of the late Thomas Kelly. Kelly served on the commission for several years. He passed at the beginning of April after a four-year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. In addition to several other committees, CASA was an organization close to Kelly.

-The next regular meeting of the Shepherdsville-Bullitt County Tourism and Conventions Commission will be Tuesday, May 21, at 11:30 a.m. at Paroquet Springs Conference Centre. The public is invited.
