Camp Bernheim for FEAT Families

By Olivia Belk

Join Bernheim staff and volunteers for a unique day camp, where campers will explore Bernheim’s 16,000+ acres and take part in a wide array of exciting, nature-based science activities. Campers will participate in experiences that build confidence and connection to the natural world, such as creek walks, hiking, and fort-building. Groups will enjoy various Kentucky habitats while learning about the many flora and fauna that call this state home. There will be time to get creative with many nature-based art projects, crafts, and discussions. Campers will leave with new friends, lifelong memories, and a deeper connection with the natural spaces around us.

What will camp supervision look like?
Due to COVID, Camp Bernheim will limit group size to 14 campers. There will be four Bernheim staff members present with the camp group at all times. Campers are welcome to bring their individual caregivers.

Can parents attend camp with their child?
Parents may attend camp with their child, however we encourage that them take advantage of the time of respite camp offers. Bernheim will be compiling a list of favorite activities for parents to indulge in on site or nearby. Parents are welcome to join us for lunch, which will occur from 12:30-1 p.m. each day.

What type of activities will occur?
Camp Bernheim will have a wide array of activities for campers to experience. We will be hiking, examining curious finds in the landscape, building forts, crafting, and creek walking. Please be aware that we will be exploring the Bernheim grounds, which include insects, poison ivy, large bodies of water, and other natural hazards.

What will my child need to bring?
Each day, campers will need to bring lunch, snacks, a reusable water bottle, appropriate footwear, hat, and a change of clothes. On days that involve creek walking, we ask that campers bring either water shoes or shoes that can get wet. Prior to camp start, please apply sunscreen and bug spray to your child. A full list of how to prepare for camp will be sent out closer to the start date. FEAT will be providing campers with a drawstring backpack and water bottle.

What additional information will we receive prior to the first day of camp?
Soon after you have registered your child for camp, you will receive an email that includes waivers and Bernheim’s COVID policy. These must be filled out and returned for your registration to be complete. As camp approaches, you will receive a social story with pictures featuring some of the areas we will frequent during camp, allowing your child to become acquainted with the grounds prior to the first day. We will also be sending you a camp schedule, activity list for families, and any additional things your camper will need to bring each day.

Please note that campers need to be bathroom independent, or if not bathroom independent have a caregiver to assist them.
