About GRIT
The GRIT Freedom Chair (GRIT) is a manual, all-terrain wheelchair powered by levers. The GRIT is more similar to a mountain bike than a typical manual wheelchair. Perfect for venturing out on your own or while being pushed, the GRIT is suitable for a variety of terrains, hills, and obstacles. Visitors of all ages and abilities can reserve the GRIT and use it to explore the natural landscapes, art, and trails at Bernheim.
Reservations
GRIT is available for on-site use between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It must be returned by 4 p.m. To ensure availability, reservations should be made at least one week in advance.
Through support from the WHAS Crusade for Children, the GRIT Freedom Chair is available to all visitors at no cost. At Bernheim, we are committed to providing opportunities for all people to connect to nature in a way that is easily accessible and affordable for everyone.
To request a reservation for GRIT, please complete the form below.
Good to Know
While GRIT can be used by a wide range of ages and varying abilities, it may not be appropriate for everyone.
We recommend bringing someone along to help, especially if this will be your first time using GRIT. While it is simple and easy to use, pushing the levers requires good upper body, core, and grip strength. Having someone to assist can give your arms a break and make riding more fun.
Bernheim staff is not able to help with transferring. A slide board is available if needed. We recommend bringing anything you normally use to transfer or bring a friend if you require further assistance.
GRIT is equipped with standard parts but includes additional accessories for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.
GRIT VIDEO TUTORIALGRIT at Playcosystem
Bernheim’s Playcosystem is the perfect place for children to use GRIT as they explore the natural world through play! Children can enjoy the unique experiences of unstructured free play and learning with the freedom and independence GRIT provides. Each area of the Playcosystem is connected by wide, paved paths on mostly even ground, with slight hills and some uneven terrain (grass, dirt, bridges, etc.) throughout.
GRIT riders under the age of 18 are required to have a parent or guardian with them at all times.
Impact of GRIT
At Bernheim, our mission is to connect people with nature. We strive to create an environment where everyone feels welcome, valued, and supported where they can find meaningful activities no matter their age, ability, experience, or background. With GRIT, visitors are able to experience the benefits of spending time outdoors with friends and family.
Plan Your Visit with GRIT
When you arrive at Bernheim on the day of your reservation, please call Bernheim’s Ranger at (502) 648-4190 for directions to GRIT check in. There are two accessible parking spaces in the Visitor Center parking lot and wheelchair accessible bathrooms located at the Visitor Center. The ranger will meet you and help you get started. To ensure your experience is safe and enjoyable, you will complete a few forms and watch a how-to video. Then, you are ready to enjoy your adventure with GRIT at Bernheim.
