I remember wandering in my family’s garden as a child, eating fresh peas right from the pod, shucking an ear of corn and enjoying that sweet burst of flavor in each uncooked bite and popping cherry tomatoes into my mouth like candy as I walked between the rows. That’s what summer tastes like to me.
As I was harvesting from the Edible Garden, I was delighted when I encountered a family with two young sisters exploring the raised beds. I heard squeals of delight as they discovered the fairy garden and then excited oohs and aahs as they noticed the different colors of cherry tomatoes. The girls ran over to me with a whirl of questions about these tomatoes. I gave them a sample of each from my basket. They took the challenge of describing the differences in taste very seriously. They both admitted that they had never had tomatoes that tasted this good before. The taste of vegetables right from the garden is truly one of summer’s greatest gifts.
