Cole Alexander (our Edible Garden Steward) picked a peck of purple peppers,
Where’s the peck of purple peppers Cole Alexander picked?
They are at Isaac’s Café getting pickled, that’s where!
Our featured Edible Garden vegetable this week is…you guessed it, PEPPERS! All week long, we will sing the praises of this late summer garden staple. You will too, when you taste the versatility of these little powerhouses of flavor every day this week at Isaac’s Café.
We have several varieties of peppers growing in the Edible Garden but this week we will focus on bell peppers. Not only do we have green bell peppers, but you will also find luscious sweet red, dark and tangy purple and even some super mild white bell peppers. They all have a unique flavor that adds just the right touch to any meal. We will be using them all in a variety of dishes this week, so you can experience the many tastes of the mighty bell pepper.
Here are a few fun facts about bell peppers:
- The scientific name for bell peppers is capsicum annum.
- You may think that bell peppers are a vegetable, but they are actually a fruit.
- If green peppers are left to ripen on the vine, they turn red and get sweeter.
- Red bell peppers have more than twice the Vitamin C of a green pepper and three times more than a naval orange! Peppers are also a great source of Vitamin A.
Join us each day at Isaac’s Café for all the bell pepper goodness, from stuffed peppers on Meatless Monday to a variety of sandwiches, soups and sides throughout the week like chicken fajita casserole, Roasted red pepper soup, an Italian sandwich with grilled peppers and even a spicy pepper relish on our white bean and kale soup. Each day will be a different bell pepper celebration.
Let us pick a peck and prepare your peppers for a positively picture perfect lunch at Isaac’s Café.
