OXYGEN, the stunning new installation by AIR’s AKUNZO

By Hannah Coleman-Zaitzeff

AKUNZO’s installation, OXYGEN, located at Paul’s Point

2022 Artist-in-Residence AKUNZO (Aris de Bakker and Karola Pezarro) have been working hard on Bernheim’s latest art installation, OXYGEN. Created out of steel and American beech branches collected from Bernheim’s forest, this breathtaking piece depicts the silhouette of a human face looking up to the sky.

OXYGEN has been moved to its permanent location at Paul’s Point lookout and can be found on Forest Hill Drive located a short distance past the Canopy Tree Walk on Paul’s Point Circle.

AKUNZO (Aris de Bakker and Karola Pezarro) bringing OXYGEN to life

OXYGEN is a beautiful installation with a strong presence that also seamlessly blends into the landscape. The work provides the perfect opportunity to talk about the importance of protecting large forest blocks and a reminder that the fresh air we breathe in the forest is essential to the oxygen of life. Participants from multiple Bernheim  events provided their thoughts and wishes about their relationship with nature on canvas tags that are attached to the installation.

Take the time to enjoy the remaining beautiful fall colors in the forest by making a trip to Paul’s Point lookout for seeing OXYGEN before the Natural Areas are closed for wildlife management from November 12 – November 20.

Bernheim’s Art in Nature team is thankful for the amazing work of AKUNZO and the contributions of Bernheim volunteers and staff in the creation and installation of this piece.

The Artist in Residence program has attracted artists from around the world who seek to use Bernheim as their inspiration. Established in 1980, this internationally renowned program annually awards artists the opportunity to live and create site-specific work inspired by their total immersion experience in the natural environment. Work created through the program allows our visitors to connect with nature in new and exciting ways.
