Perhaps the groundhog was right when he predicted 6 more weeks of winter! I looked out my door this morning and the daffodils that greeted me just yesterday were some where hiding under a blanket of white. I have never really bought into the idea of Punxsutawney Phil being able to accurately predict the weather. It turns out, he only has a 39% accuracy rate, so we may do better just flipping a coin. I do however believe we can learn from nature and take cues that help us cope with setbacks and unexpected challenges.
Snow is an excellent insulator for many plants including daffodils, and even some budding trees. Nature shows us by example and we should take notice. There are times when what we see as a challenge is really a way to slow down and insulate ourselves from plunging too quickly into what may be an even more difficult situation.
One of my favorite quotes is by Hal Borland. “No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn“. So as we look out on the beauty of this snowy morning, be reminded to take comfort in the lessons that it can teach us: to slow down, take nourishment from our surroundings and be ready to head outside once the roads are safe and enjoy what may (or may not be) one of the last snowfalls of the season.
Today would be a perfect day to head to Bernheim, take in the picturesque stillness of the forest, Big Prairie and my personal favorite, the holly collection. While you’re at it, stop by Isaac’s Café for that needed break and some serious winter comfort food!
Today’s Meatless Monday special is a not so traditional Shepherd’s Pie, with choice of seasonal side and Irish Soda bread.
Tuesday through Thursday will feature a Cuban sandwich, pressed with honey butter and served with chips and a self serve drink.
Our St. Patrick’s Day special starts Friday with an authentic Reuben sandwich (thin sliced local corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, our own special dressing and grilled to perfection on rye bread), served with chips and pickles!
