New Plant Species at Bernheim: Virginia Meadow Beauty

By Kelly Vowels

A new plant species for Bernheim Forest was found this summer in the arboretum. Virginia Meadow Beauty (Rhexia virginica) is a small flower that blooms in mid-summer to fall, and is found in open areas with acidic soil. It was discovered here in the arboretum, and in the new property acquired this year. It has a beautiful pink flower, and the seeds are pitcher shaped. It is very attractive to pollinators, and would make a great addition to any landscape.
