The May Full “Flower” Moon Hike was an incredible experience, with the program selling out and the participants being treated to a mesmerizing display of nature’s beauty. As the program started and Bernheim slowly transitioned from day into night, the Baltimore orioles serenaded us with their sweet melodies, while the barn swallows put on a thrilling aerial show.
As we started on our journey around Lake Nevin, we were greeted with the sight of the glowing orange orb of the rising moon peeking through the clouds, and we were fortunate enough to witness the first fireflies of the season. Lake Nevin itself came alive with the sound of one or more beavers slapping their tails, adding to the already enchanting atmosphere.
On the hike, we encountered a diverse range of frog species which entertained us to delight. There were seven different types of frogs including cricket frogs, leopard frogs, bullfrogs, green frogs, Fowlers toads, tree frogs, and even the mesmerizing American toads!
The magic of the night was enhanced by the presence of glow worms, while Venus shone boldly and brightly in the sky.
But the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the majestic Full Moon, casting its ethereal light over the breathtaking beauty of Bernheim’s night landscape. It was a truly unforgettable experience and one that the lucky participants will surely cherish.
Special thanks to J Lee Hutchins Jr, Leslie Senn, Meg Thomas, for co-leading the hike!
