What a year 2016 turned out to be for Bernheim! In 2016, we had the highest attendance on record with over 250,000 guests visiting the forest and in April, over 1400 people helped us to break the world record for the most people hugging trees at the same time in the same place; Bernheim grew by 333 acres in 2016, going from 14,340 to 14,673 by acquiring three new tracts of land. We also can’t forget the first documented black bear sighting in Bernheim. Named Bernie by popular vote, he was spotted multiple times between July and November.
Because of our 2016 successes, members of our community have taken notice. A grant of $15,000 has been pledged to match gifts dollar for dollar if Bernheim can raise an additional $15,000 February 15, 2017. This generous pledge, if matched, will help Bernheim get off to a great start in 2017. With so many new and returning Bernheim visitors, Bernheim can put our best face forward in 2017 and continue to fulfill our important mission of Connecting People with Nature.
