When most folks think of the week leading up to the Kentucky Derby, they think of horses, hats and all the hoopla that surrounds this one of a kind event. That’s all well and good, but as you may expect, I tend to think in terms of the special foods that are synonymous with spring in Kentucky and more specifically Derby week.
Many of the traditional foods you find at Derby events take into account what is growing in our area around the first week of May (like the mint in the signature Derby cocktail, the mint julep). Isaac’s Café is no exception. This week, we will be combining the best that the Edible Garden has to offer along with those Derby dishes that kick off this week of fun. I thought we would have some fun with Derby sliders. You know, those fun little sandwiches that can transform a regular meal into a party of flavor. Here’s the lineup for this week’s special sliders and when you pair it with a cup of soup or seasonal side, you have a a winning combination!
We will be continuing our Meatless Monday theme by having a Bourbon BBQ Mushroom and Lentil Slider with Baked Beans. I think Meatless Mondays should be a new Derby tradition.
Tuesday you will find the oh so traditional Benedictine slider that will have you wanting to sip a mint julep while strolling in your best Derby hat.
Wednesday will feature that local favorite, the Kentucky Hot Brown but in slider form. It will be coupled with a fresh mint couscous salad.
Thursday, how about a bourbon smoked pork tenderloin slider with our own pickled radish topping?
Friday will be our nod to the Oaks by having an oak and bourbon grass-fed beef slider, topped with our fresh garden greens and a smokey bourbon aoli.
Make Bernheim and Isaac’s Café part of your Derby and May Day tradition!
