Josephine Nuese, author of “The Country Garden,” said, “ Anyone who thinks gardening begins in the spring and ends in the fall is missing the best part of the whole year; for gardening begins in January with the dream.” This is so true! Every time I meet with Cole Alexander, Bernheim’s Edible Garden steward to plan and, yes, DREAM of what will be planted in the Edible Garden, I am like a kid making a wish list for Santa! Even as we are still harvesting a bounty of winter garden goodness, my thoughts still wander to heirloom tomatoes, bright yellow squash and another bumper crop of fresh basil and even asparagus.
Anything worthwhile takes planning, dreaming and hard work. The same is true for a good meal. At Isaac’s Café, serious thought goes into every item on our menu – the weekly specials and our ever popular soups of the day. We ask ourselves: Is it local? Is it healthy? Is it sustainable? And last, but certainly not least, is it delicious!?
