Have Fe Fi Fo Fun at Bernheim this May

By Amy Joseph Landon

Fe Fi Fo FunFest, “Giant” runs and hikes, and wildflower walks are part of spring celebrations

Spring has sprung and that means it’s time to get outside and experience all that is budding in nature. That also means it’s time for the first-ever Fe Fi Fo FunFest and Fe Fi Fo Run on Saturday, May 18.

Step into the world of Forest Giants and woodland faeries from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bernheim’s Fe Fi Fo FunFest. The spring celebration includes nature discovery stations, construction of the faerie village, a costume parade, giant tree giveaways, local food trucks, Isaac’s Café offerings and more. Bullitt County high school students will present a research showcase, including a catapult launch. Garden gnomes, prairie sprites, cave wizards, and other whimsical creatures also welcome. A $10 per-car environmental impact fee applies for non-members.

And don’t miss the Fe Fi Fo Run that morning starting at 8 a.m. Join Bernheim as participants race through Bernheim’s Giant Forest to find the Forest Giants. The Fe Fi Fo Run will consist of a 5K and 10K race, which will journey to all three Giants. Families and kids can participate in the 1-mile Fun Run, which will visit one of the Giants. Cost is $35 for the 5K, $45 for the 10K and $10 for the 1-mile Family Fun Run and includes a Fe Fi Fo Run t-shirt for participants of the 10K and 5K, and a Fe Fi Fo Run drawstring backpack for the Fun Run participants.

That’s just the beginning of the great family fun available at Bernheim in May. Details on all of May’s other programs and activities are below:

Lunch & Learn: Gardening for Butterflies
Meet Volunteer Naturalist Corinne Mastey on Wednesday, May 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Visitor Center to learn how to garden and landscape in a way that will help butterflies flourish. Butterfly-friendly gardens include not only nectar-rich flowers, but also host plants for caterpillars and other landscape features to help attract and nourish these beautiful insects.

Bernheim Lunch & Learn programs are designed for those who enjoy spending time outdoors in the company of other adults who love learning about nature. Each program includes group introductions, a short-themed hike, and a fabulous lunch from Isaac’s Café. The lunch menu can be found at Bernheim.org.

Registration and payment are due by 4 p.m. on the day prior to the program. Please call (502) 955-8512 or visit Bernheim.org to register. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

ECO Kids Discovery Days
The E-C-O stands for Every Child Outside, and that’s exactly where kids can be found during ECO Kids Discovery Days. Discovery Days usually take place the first and third Saturday of each month, but there will be only one in May due to the Fe Fi Fo Fun Fest falling on the third Saturday. Discovery Days take place at Bernheim’s Visitor Center and include:

On Your Own Challenge from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Discovery Stations from 1 – 4 p.m.
Hike of the Day led by a Bernheim guide, starts at the Visitor Center at 2 p.m. and runs 45 to 60 minutes.

On Saturday, May 4, join Bernheim for an exciting Journey to the Giants. Children will hike to find all three of the Forest Giants in our Giant Forest and complete an activity booklet in the On Your Own Challenge! Kids and their families will have fun visiting with the giants, exploring hands-on Discovery Stations and the Hike of the Day during the afternoon.
