Join Us for the New Elm Lick Trail Ribbon Cutting
Since 1993 hiking enthusiasts have marked the first Saturday of every June as National Trails Day. The annual celebration was developed to inspire the public and trail enthusiasts nationwide to seek out, discover, learn about, and celebrate America’s trail system.
There’s no better place to do just that in Kentucky than Bernheim Forest. And we have an even greater reason to celebrate. That’s because this Saturday at 10:00 a.m., we will officially open our new five-mile Elm Lick Trail.
Bernheim friends, member and the general public are invited to join in the celebration of the five-mile trail takes you on a journey across the 500-acre Elm Lick watershed, following upland ridge lines with views of the knobs before dropping into the Elm Lick Valley. The trail then climbs a knob to the ridge line on the north side of Elm Lick Valley, and then drops back in to upper section of the watershed before climbing a steep hillside to finish the loop.
Members and visitors have long-appreciated Bernheim’s wonderful trail network, but other than our 14-mile Millennium Trail, none of our trails was more than three miles until now. Our new Elm Lick trail provides a little more distance and challenge for the thousands of people who connect with nature on a great hike at Bernheim.”
After the ribbon-cutting at the trail head, Bernheim’s executive director, Dr. Wourms will lead a hike of the trail. Those wishing to join him are asked to sign up ahead of time by calling Bernheim’s main number at 502-955-8512. Hikers should bring water and wear long pants and a hat.
In addition to Elm Lick’s grand opening, the third annual Bernheim Trail Marathon and Half Marathon takes place on Saturday as part of the Trail Runner Magazine Trophy Series. Runners still interested must register at www.ultrasignup.com by Wednesday, May 29. The public is welcome to come out and cheer on the runners at the finish line across from the Visitor Center. Both races start at 8:00a.m.
So join us for a hike and what’s sure to be a great celebration.
