As a former Louisvillian, now living life as a renowned Wildlife Conservation Photographer in the Catskill Mountains, Carla Rhodes keeps bringing her talents back home as Bernheim’s inaugural 2022 Environmental Artist in Residence. The artist’s work and creative practice is centered around telling engaging and impactful stories through photographs that will inspire viewers to respect and protect all things wild. While in residence, Carla developed a series of photographic essays that bring attention to the flora and fauna of Bernheim, honing in on the animals, creatures, and habitat present at The Cedar Grove wildlife corridor, which is currently under threat by a proposed LG&E pipeline.

Carla has brought Bernheim and our pipeline story to the world through an exquisite body of work that highlights the beauty found in Bernheim’s least accessible spaces. The artist is a true advocate for the protection of the species currently at risk of losing their habitat to the pipeline and she has worked tirelessly to get the story published by Feature Shoot, The Sierra Club, and most importantly, The Guardian! This work has been critical as Bernheim continues to voice our concerns and defend our rights with the Public Service Commission, the KY Division of Water, the Army Corp of Engineers, and other agencies issuing permits or providing regulatory review.

Established in 1980, this internationally renowned program annually awards artists the opportunity to live and create site-specific work inspired by their total immersion experience in the natural environment. Work created through the program allows our visitors to connect with nature in new and exciting ways.
