Bernheim has been using prescribed fire (sometimes called controlled burning) to help us to manage our many habitats for the past 23 years. We know that historically, fire has played an important part in maintaining healthy native habitats.
This February, for the first time in our history, we invited the Kentucky Prescribed Fire Council to conduct their Burn Boss Workshop at Bernheim.
The Prescribed Fire Council consists of state and federal agencies, conservation organizations (like Bernheim), universities, and private individuals who promote the safe and beneficial use of prescribed burning as a land management tool.
Twenty-two students from organizations including the U.S. Forest Service, KY Division of Forestry, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and KY Department of Fish and Wildlife participated in this three day training, which put them one step closer to becoming a certified burn boss in the state of Kentucky. We are honored to have professionals from across the country and state at Bernheim to take their first step in becoming a certified burn boss by learning from the knowledgeable and experienced Bernheim staff.
