Bernheim has selected three Artist-in-Residence participants for the 2014-2015 year. Don Pollack, You Myung Gyun and Jaime Bull have been invited to live at Bernheim and create unique pieces of art that remain part of Bernheim’s permanent collection.
“This year we received 62 applications from 17 countries and dozens of states,” said Visual Arts Coordinator Martha Slaughter. “We are thrilled with the growth of this program and the quality artists it attracts. The greatest reward is helping connect people to nature through art.”
Don Pollack is a painter and adjunct professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is slated to visit Bernheim four times throughout the year during which he will tour the region by foot or bicycle. During his purposefully slow journey, Pollack plans to gather images to paint, ultimately culminating in an exhibition at Bernheim in late 2015.
Korean artist, You Myung Gyun. will create large paintings as well as a large outdoor sculpture made of natural collected materials from the forest. Gyun is known for his massive, organic installation works, which are inspired by harmonic energy and explore the relationship between natural order and human society. He has been featured in Korean Eye 2012 and participated in the 2013 Socrates Sculpture Park Emerging Artist Fellowship program.
Performance artist, costume maker and visual artist, Jaime Bull from Athens, Georgia, will use Bernheim as a resource to create costumes and wearable sculptures inspired by beasts and swamp creatures, performance pieces and digital prints. Her creations will make appearances at Bernheim’s CONNECT, Bugfest, Colorfest and in exhibitions.
Along with the Artist-in-Residence participants, Bernheim has also invited two regional artists, Joanne Price and Shohei Katayama, to participate in a related program, Local Use by Local Artists. The program invites artists from the region to create works for display.
