imball’s work has appeared or is forthcoming in Black Warrior Review, Copper Nickel, South Loop Review, Defunct, and other publications. She’s been in residence at Yaddo and will travel to Ucross this autumn. She is an assistant professor of illustration at Lesley University in Boston, and is spending a year-long sabbatical in Kentucky with her family. Find her online at margaretkimball.com. While at Bernheim Kimball will “examine the way the natural environment can feel like some sort of primordial home” and how “memory is just not linked to place, but largely comprised of places.”
Christian Moody’s fiction has appeared in Best New American Voices, Best American Fantasy, Esquire, The Cincinnati Review, The Collagist, and other publications. He has been in residence at Yaddo, and his work has been awarded a 2015 Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council and fellowships from The Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Taft Center for the Humanities, and elsewhere. He is a visiting assistant professor of English at Centre College in Kentucky. The fiction he would like to complete with his experience at Bernheim are those that are related to “the intersections of the natural and human world.” His work is inspired by and “set in forest landscapes, draw from the shapes and patterns of nature, and ask questions about the natural world and the place of humans in it.”
Both Margaret Kimball and Christian Moody will be here for a week in July and two weeks in August. They will be discussing their work at an event in September. Stay tuned for the announcement of this reading and discussion of their work.
The Bernheim Writing Residency was established in 2013 as collaborative partnership between Sarabande Books, The Baltic Writers Residency and Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest.
Participants in the summer residency spend two to six weeks at Bernheim Forest, an idyllic 14,000-acre nature preserve near Louisville, Kentucky. Each resident lives in a private, fully-equipped cottage on the grounds and enjoys access to Bernheim’s extensive forest, gardens and arboretum. Residents offer a public reading or discussion during their tenure and may devote the rest of their time to writing in a pristine, natural setting.
