Experience Fall’s Splendor at Bernheim

By Amy Joseph Landon

2020 has been challenging for most of us in many ways. Though vacations have been canceled, students are learning remotely, and gatherings are limited, getting out an exploring nature can relieve stress, enhance quality family time, and bring peace to an otherwise crazy mindset.

Fall is the perfect time to get your nature fix at Bernheim. The bright hues of fall leaves remind us all of each season’s renewal and the beauty that can be found around us every day.

Currently, the maples are turning bright shades of yellow and red, while dogwood shows hues of deep reds and purples. Hydrangeas and sumac are also glowing with shades of red, though one of the shining stars of fall, the ginkgo, remains mostly green, with a slight yellow halo, at this time.

You’ll find all of these plants throughout our arboretum. Hike the Sun and Shade Loop for some great fall foliage, or look for the overlap of fall and late summer as you spot goldenrod and aster on the Big Prairie as you hike the Giant Trail. If you have time, be sure to drive up Forest Hill Road for views of hillsides and interior forest colors.

Most importantly, take care of yourselves. We encourage you to find a nice spot on a bench, breathe in our fresh air, and find some calm among the storm that is 2020. Don’t forget to also take in the sights and smells of the great outdoors – they’ll stick with you long after you leave.
