Arts Update

By Amy Joseph Landon

mei-ling#12013 has been an exciting year for our Arts in Nature program.  We welcomed Matt Weir and watched him create our newest sculpture, Earth Measure.  We held our first light sculpture competition titled CONNECTglow.  We welcomed nationally known installation artist, Craig Colorusso, who presented his solar powered sound sculpture, Sun Boxes. We saw the return of two previous Artists in Residence, Nori Hall and Todd Smith, with a marvelous exhibit of their photography as part of the Louisville Photo Biennial.  We also welcomed Ann Townsend, our first Writer in Residence.  Ann is a professor and English Department Chair at Denison University, who has published with Sarabande Books, Inc. Sculptor, Heike Endemann paid us a visit this summer as well.

And for the past month and half, our newest artists in residence, Mei-ling Hom and David McClelland, have been living at Bernheim researching and exploring the forest.  They will return in the spring and create woven straw sculpture(s) that will be inoculated with mushroom spawn, exploring the intersection of art and mycoculture.  Mycoculture is the process of producing food, medicine or other products through the cultivation of mushrooms.  This picture is a sneak peek of what we they might create.

Do you or someone you know have an interest in the Bernheim’s Artist in Residence program?  The Bernheim Artist in Residence is awarded on an annual basis to a talented artist who will work within the forest and/or arboretum to create works that are inspired by or potentially installed in the natural world. The residency provides the artist an opportunity to advance her or his own skills and career while enhancing awareness of Bernheim’s goals and mission regionally, nationally and internationally.

Applications for the 2014-2015 residency will be accepted November 1, 2013 through midnight EST, January 31, 2014. All applications must be postmarked by midnight EST and each will receive notification of the results by March 15, 2014. Please visit Arts in Nature on our website for more information and the application procedure.
