Bernheim is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for tree hugging, and you’re invited to help.

On Saturday, June 4, 2016, Bernheim will attempt to break the record for most people hugging trees at the same place at the same time. Dubbed the Bernheim Big Tree Hug Challenge, the Guinness World Record attempt will require at least 1,201 tree huggers to break the record, but we hope to have at least 3,000 people to not only break the record but to hold that title for years to come. South Korea holds the current world record.

The tree hug will be a celebration of the role trees play in our lives and will include a full afternoon of fun tree-themed activities from noon – 4 p.m. along with Volunteer Naturalist-led discovery stations, family friendly activities, music, and food vendors. The actual tree hug takes place at 2:30 p.m. Huggers are asked to arrive no later than 1:30 to be assigned their tree and get in place for the official count. There is no cost to participate, but we recommend pre-registering by clicking here. Volunteer opportunities will also be available.

“The Bernheim Big Tree Hug Challenge gives everyone a fun way to show appreciation for trees,” said Dr. Mark Wourms, Bernheim’s Executive Director. “Trees are disappearing from our landscape in alarming numbers, but they are essential to our health and well being.”

While the hug will be a symbolic act, it’s what we do before and after it that matters. The three hug is a fun reminder that we can all do our part. Whether it’s protecting large forest blocks like Bernheim or planting trees at your place of business or your own backyard, everyone can play a part in protecting trees.

The Big Tree Hug Challenge is hosted in conjunction with the traveling exhibit Vanishing Acts: Trees Under Threat on display at Bernheim through July 5. The Morton Arboretum produced the exhibit which shines a spotlight on the plight of trees today and how many species are threatened with extinction, much like the animals whose habitat they provide.

Thanks to our corporate sponsor, LG&E-KU for its role in protecting trees including the ones purchased and planted to accompany the Vanishing Acts exhibit. Additionally, thanks to Bullitt County Tourism and WHAS11, our official television media partner, for their support of the Bernheim Tree Hug Challenge.

So mark your calendars and register now. Don’t miss the chance to be a part of something BIG!
