During August and September of 2014 artist Myung Gyun You created a large outdoor sculpture titled Photosynthesis at the Artist Studio on the shore of Lake Nevin. The artist is known for his enormous, organic installation works, which he states, “explore the relationship between natural order and human society.” He contemplates the notion that everything can be reduced to science: to a molecular and cellular level while simultaneously coexisting in the vastness of the universe. By creating a piece of this scale the viewer is drawn to its sheer physicality, the beauty of its form and construction, and its relationship to its natural surroundings. The materials are simply wood lath, which is bent and bound with wire to form the inner black sphere and the larger outer orange elliptical shape. Lumber is used for structural support and additional visual elements. While participating in the Artists in Residence program at Bernheim, Gyun has created a powerful work while being inspired by the beauty of Bernheim. Myung Gyun You recently moved to the United States from South Korea and has been living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for just over a year. He was featured in Korean Eye 2012 at the Saatchi Gallery in London, which brought contemporary Korean art to the international audience that coincided with the Olympic Games. He participated in the New York’s 2013 Socrates Sculpture Park Emerging Artist Fellowship program by creating a massive piece for Socrates Park on Governor’s Island. He was also recently featured in an outdoor sculpture exhibition in Key West, Florida, as well as currently showing in a survey at the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
