WannaBee a Beekeeper?

By Amy Joseph Landon

Camp Bee program - 18If you are interested in beekeeping or learning more about bees, Bernheim is the place for you! This upcoming Sunday kicks off our six-week Family Backyard Beekeeping Series, and if that’s not enough, you can join us next Saturday for our Bees and the Plants they Love presentation.

Join Bernheim Volunteer Beekeepers on Sunday, February 8 from 2 – 4 p.m. for the kick-off to the Family Backyard Beekeeping Series that will introduce participants to the basics of bees and beekeeping. During the second Sunday of each month from February to July, families will collectively build a hive, install a buzzing ball of honeybees, inspect the hive, and hopefully harvest honey! Because the hive will be placed in Bernheim’s Edible Garden, families will be able to visit the honeybees they help raise.

Call (502) 955-8512 for more information or to register. Registration and payment are due by 4 p.m. on the day prior to the program. Bernheim members $20 for series, Non-members $30 for series.

Our love for bees also makes Valentine’s Day the perfect day for our Bees and the Plants they Love presentation! Join us on Saturday, February 14 from 1 – 2:30 p.m. in the Education Center to learn how to incorporate the trees, shrubs, and perennials that give bees a boost during the last days of winter.

Tammy Horn, Kentucky State Apiarist and author of numerous bee related articles and books, is leading this engaging and informative program. Whether you are a beekeeper or simply concerned about the plight of honeybees, Tammy will have recommendations that may surprise you. Certainly you will come away with ideas for romancing bees and other pollinators in your own backyard and landscape.

Registration and payment are due by 4 p.m. on the day prior to start of the program. Call (502) 955-8512. Bernheim members $10, Non-members $12.
