Walnut Preparing for Winter

This year has been an amazing “mast” year.  Mast is a term biologists give to hard nuts and fleshy fruits that are produced in differing abundance from year to year.  Here are two photos of a lone walnut that sits just outside of the big prairie as it drops its leaves and nuts in preparation for winter.  The top photo is from September 12th and the second picture is from October 3rd.  We will post pictures of this tree in the dead of winter as well.
