Summer Solstice Welcome at Earth Measure

By Amy Joseph Landon

Earth Measure Dinner - 017Ever welcome summer under a starlit sky in the beauty of a nearly 15,000 acre forest?  Now’s your chance.   Join us this Saturday, June 20 at 8:50 p.m. – Sunday, June 21 at 6:50 a.m. as we witness the last sunset of spring and welcome the first sunrise of summer in our first ever Summer Solstice Welcome at Earth Measure event. This unique overnight program will be held at Bernheim’s Earth Measure, a limestone sculpture located in the Big Prairie.

As day turns to night, Volunteer Naturalists will share stories of the constellations and the Louisville Astronomical Society will provide telescopes for viewing the crescent moon, six planets, stars, clusters, nebulae and galaxies – including the brilliant summer Milky Way at 1 a.m.

Other nocturnal activities include a meet and greet with Earth Measure sculptor Matt Weir, small bonfire and a drum circle open to other acoustic instruments and impromptu jamming.

Chairs and blankets are recommended for viewing the cosmos, and small tents can be set up. Snacks and beverages are welcome, but alcohol, fires, and pets are strictly prohibited. All participants must register by 4 p.m. on Friday, June 19 by calling (502) 955-8512. Bernheim members $20, non-members $30.

See you Saturday!
