Wonder, Through the Eyes and Lens of the Bernheim Community

By Lauren Furjes

Member Photo Contest Captures Wonder Throughout

What does wonder look like at Bernheim?

For some, it’s landscapes: the morning mist over Lake Nevin or the sunrise illuminating the Big Prairie. For others, it’s wildlife: the flash of a dragonfly’s wings or a chance encounter with deer.

Wonder can be found in the faces of children encountering an orb weaver spider at BugFest or exploring their potential at Playcosystem. It can be seen in spring’s awakening, summer’s golden glow, the flaming colors of fall, or the subtle beauty of winter.

Our recent Member Photo Contest invited members to capture wonder. The incredible range of photographs we received reminded us that there are as many ways to experience Bernheim as there are people who cherish it.

Together, the photos tell a bigger story. Wonder is everywhere at Bernheim, but we each experience it in our own way.

I have photographed Bernheim for years. Every season there is always one special wonder that stands out and draws me to revisit it over and over. It could be a special tree with gnarly branches or uncovered roots, or a newly discovered location where Pileated woodpeckers can be found. This summer, the beautiful wildflowers covered with dancing butterflies and buzzing bees all along the Fire Tower roadside stole the show. They are fading now and giving way to Autumn’s next wonder.

This photograph embodies “Wonder in the Wild” by capturing a peaceful wildlife moment. The deer and its reflection reveal the beauty, grace, and tranquility of nature, inviting viewers to appreciate the remarkable creatures that share the natural world.

Chris Jones, member since 2022

For the photo of the Flat-Backed Millipede I was making my way back to the car from the Rock Run Loop trail and just happened to look down at a rotting log and caught this guy going about his business. A very serendipitous opportunity. I love all things tiny and there is always something new to wonder at when I visit Bernheim.
