Wildlife Corridor Impacted by LG&E Pipeline

Bernheim’s Wildlife Corridor Impacted by Construction of LG&E Gas Pipeline

Bernheim’s Cedar Grove Wildlife Corridor, after demolition and site preparation, is currently under construction of the Louisville Gas and Electric natural gas pipeline. It has been over six years since LG&E proposed the 12-mile pipeline across natural lands in Bullitt County, including a nearly one-mile section in Bernheim. Despite years of challenges, including a condemnation lawsuit, identified water quality issues, and endangered species permitting, Bernheim and neighboring landowners were unsuccessful in stopping the pipeline.

We deeply appreciate the tireless efforts of our members, volunteers, legal representatives, conservation donors, and many others who opposed this pipeline. Your support has been invaluable. Though we were able to save features such as rock outcrops and streams, the clearing of trees and continued construction of the pipeline still means uncertainty for sensitive species. Clearing vegetation and trenching has further eroded and destabilized the landforms. Springs and streams along the route are being protected as well as possible, but sedimentation and accidental discharges occur due to the very steep knobs of this corridor.

Bernheim remains committed to achieving the best possible outcome for wildlife and natural landscapes given the circumstances. We continue to advocate for the preservation and protection of these precious areas. The healthy forests and prairies on this land are intentionally managed to provide clean air, water, and wildlife for our communities downwind and downstream for generations to come.

As we work with LG&E, we will ensure the installed pipeline easement area will be converted to prairie habitat and allowed to regain some of its natural functions for wildlife in the future. Thank you to all who have stood with Bernheim and our neighboring landowners throughout this turbulent period, and for championing private property rights, advocating for forest land that provides clean air and water, and the protection of our dwindling remaining wild places.
