Within the Forest: Without the Forest by DOMM

By Jenny Zeller

Created by Raffy Mardirossian and Paul Matevosyan of DOMM Architecture Studio in Pasadena, CA, Within the Forest: Without the Forest introduces a familiar architectural concept—a courtyard—into the midst of a sprawling forest within the L+A+N+D site.

Rolls of orange geotextile fabric are wrapped around three existing trees to delineate a tall triangular enclosure open to the sky above. By linking these three pre-existing points, this floating pavilion generates a new and immersive spatial dimension within the forest, one that is intrinsically tied to and informed by these selected trees.

From a distance, the pavilion can be perceived as an abstract, solid volume, drawing visitors in with its striking presence. However, upon approach, it will reveal itself to be a communal and intimate space, providing a striking contrast to the expansive natural surroundings beyond its boundaries.

Within the Forest: Without the Forest offers guests a sensory experience, and draws attention to the beautiful specimens of mature tulip poplar trees located within this area of the L+A+N+D site. The work would not be possible without the installation support of Mikey Altieri with Grand Canopy Tree Service.
