Welcoming Drew Combs: Bernheim’s New Horticulture Manager

By Bernheim

We’re excited to share that Drew Combs officially joined Bernheim as our new Horticulture Manager on Monday, May 12. This role is mission-critical to the success of the Arboretum, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome someone with such deep knowledge and dedication.

Drew most recently served as Horticulture Manager at Waterfront Botanical Gardens, where he managed a 23-acre site developed on a former landfill. With soil health being a major concern, Drew led a long-term remediation plan that will benefit the garden for decades. His foresight and care for the land will be a tremendous asset to Bernheim’s living collections.

Drew doesn’t just love trees—he’s highly qualified to care for them. He is an ISA Certified Arborist with Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ). He also serves as Vice President and President-Elect of the Kentucky Arborists Association, volunteers with Trees Louisville and Louisville Grows, and supports ISA Tree Climbing Competitions at the national level.

“Having witnessed Drew’s ability at Waterfront Botanical Gardens, we are so fortunate to have him serve as Horticulture Manager here at Bernheim,” said Renee Frith, Bernheim’s Director of Horticulture and Sustainable Landscapes. “Drew will elevate our collections through dedicated service, expert knowledge, and genuine care of both plants and humans. I personally am honored to work with such a consummate professional.”

Those who’ve worked with Drew consistently describe him as knowledgeable, kind, and hardworking—and we wholeheartedly agree. As he shared during the application process:

I have a passion for public horticulture and its grand mission to share the wonder of plants and the natural world in a way that is accessible to all people. I strive for authenticity, humility, and excellence throughout my life. I am an open communicator, quick to learn and readily adaptable. I have a mind for detail, a focus on safety and, inspired by plants, live my life committed to internal and external growth. I take tremendous pride in my work, my community, and the relationships I’ve built over my career. I look forward to the opportunity to bring these skill sets and experience to help fulfill Bernheim’s mission of connecting people with nature.

We look forward to introducing Drew to more of our staff, volunteers, and community members in the weeks to come. Please help us give him a warm welcome!
