We’re excited to share that Bernheim’s first-ever Volunteer Tool Library is now up and running! What started as a vision in early 2023 has become a reality thanks to the collaborative spirit and dedication of our team. An unused vehicle bay in the Operations Compound has been transformed into a fully equipped hub for volunteer tools and supplies.
This new space is designed to support volunteers across multiple departments. Mulching tools such as pitchforks, rakes, and wheelbarrows are now readily available for projects in the Arboretum, Playcosystem, and Arts in Nature installations. Garden hand tools will support volunteers working in the Edible Garden and Nursery. Trail Rangers will make good use of folding handsaws and pruners to help keep our trails clear, while the Beaver Brigade will benefit from sturdy sledgehammers during restoration efforts. The library also includes safety gear and a general-purpose tool set to support a wide range of projects.
Modeled after the Louisville Tool Library, our system allows volunteers and staff to check out tools in advance, helping streamline preparations for group workdays, recurring projects, and corporate volunteer events. This thoughtful organization not only ensures volunteers have what they need to succeed but also makes coordination easier for staff across departments.
We’re proud to take this step toward enhancing the volunteer experience at Bernheim—and we look forward to seeing the Tool Library grow alongside our amazing volunteer community.
