BugFest at Bernheim is Saturday, September 19
Discover insects and their relatives at this fun, family event
Bernheim Forest and Arboretum will come alive with buzz and excitement at BugFest on Saturday, September 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This fun, family-friendly festival will be filled with activities to explore insects and their relatives. BugFest offers a unique opportunity to discover the important role insects play in our lives and the vital ecological services they provide.
“It’s a joy watching people of all ages connect with something new at BugFest,” explained Wren Smith, Interpretive Programs Manager at Bernheim. “Many people think of insects as just pests and we’d like to change that by helping people understand the ecological services these tiny creatures provide.”
With a blend of educational activities and fun experiences, Bernheim hopes attendees will leave with a newfound respect for these fascinating creatures. Highlights of BugFest include the nature discovery stations, an Insect Zoo, bug-themed crafts, live music with Mr. Dan, Bug Safaris, face painting, and the Bug Parade.
“One of my favorite events at BugFest is the Bug Parade,” stated Lynette Cox, Director of Marketing and Communications. “Children dress up in their wings and masks borrowed from our costume tent and participate in the parade.”
Specials guests at the event include Idlewild Butterfly Farm, Kevin Wiener from All Bugs Go to Kevin, and Backyard Ecology™.
Backyard Ecology™ will give two presentations at BugFest, including “Be Kind to Our Natives. Don’t Be Fooled by the Package” and “Pollinator Planting: Quick and Easy Fall Garden Tips.”
Bernheim’s Fall Plant Sale is being held outside the Visitor Center in conjunction with BugFest. Bernheim’s horticulture team will be offering a variety of trees, shrubs, and perennials. These native pollinator plants will provide seasonal color and habitat support for butterflies, bees, and birds for years to come.
Members of the horticulture team at Bernheim will be available to answer questions and offer advice on installing and maintaining your selections.
Bernheim Members can also enjoy a special after-party screening of The Extraordinary Caterpillar, an hour-long film, suitable for all ages. The film features stunning macro photography and highlights the important role caterpillars plan in biodiversity.
