Beavers in the Spotlight: Southeast Beaver Alliance Hosts Inaugural Summit
Last week marked a significant milestone for beaver conservation in the southeastern United States. The Southeast Beaver Alliance (SEBA) hosted its inaugural summit, bringing together beaver advocates and ecological professionals from across the region to discuss beaver research, policy, outreach, and habitat restoration.
While beaver advocacy groups have been active across the country for some time, the Southeast has long lacked a coordinated effort—until now. Late last year SEBA formed to fill that gap, with a mission to highlight the essential role beavers play in strengthening ecosystems and supporting human communities. The alliance is working to shift the outdated perception of beavers as a nuisance by emphasizing their vital role in enhancing biodiversity, improving water quality, and building climate-resilient landscapes.
Bernheim Forest is proud to be a founding member of SEBA and a leader in beaver conservation across the region. Bernheim’s natural areas team is actively restoring and protecting streams, wetlands, and beaver habitats throughout the forest, advancing a vision where beavers are recognized for the ecological benefits that they provide.
