New Year, New Star Term

By August Ocasio-Simon

As we say goodbye to the last echoes of 2025 and welcome in 2026, Bernheim’s Education and Interpretation team is excited to host 24 sophomores from Bethlehem High School for their Star Term.

Each January, students from Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, Kentucky, take part in Star Term, a two-week period of non-traditional learning focused on hands-on, immersive experiences. During this time, students explore a wide range of topics. Some study local history, some participate in construction projects to be “like St. Joseph,” and some take time to join us at Bernheim for Forest School.

During Forest School, students experience many sides of the forest and the work that supports everything visitors enjoy at Bernheim. In the first week, they tracked down all three Forest Giants, explored the mysteries of Rock Run, and learned how to identify winter trees using only their twigs! At the same time, they heard from Bernheim staff about volunteer opportunities, the Trail Ranger program, and even how to design a nature-based playground.

Now, as we reach the end of their second and final week, students are spending time exploring Bernheim’s art collection while putting the finishing touches on their projects.

That’s right—while the Bethlehem students are here to take in the beauty of art and nature, they’re also working on projects aimed at engaging other visitors at Bernheim. Why? Many visitors do not interact directly with Bernheim staff beyond the front kiosk, which means the deeper knowledge and sense of connection often gained through guided programs can be missed. This is where the Forest School projects come in.

Working in small groups, students designed activities that any visitor can enjoy, each shaped by a unique perspective. One project invites visitors to compare the bark of trees along the trail. Another encourages guests to create their own art during their visit. One group even developed a social media challenge aimed at inspiring more people to explore Bernheim. Each project reflects a small piece of what the students came to love during their time here.

As the week comes to a close, we look forward to seeing their thoughtful work come to life. We hope you’ll visit and experience what these shining stars have created for your 2026 at Bernheim.
