National Nonprofit Day is August 17

By Mark Wourms, Ph.D.

Celebrate National Nonprofit Day with Bernheim on August 17

Nonprofit organizations work for the greater good in their communities and environment. Bernheim Forest and Arboretum has a 96-year history of:

  • Protecting over 16,000 acres of life-giving natural lands which provide clean water, air, and rich biodiversity
  • Restoring critical habitat in forest, fields, streams, and wetlands
  • Studying and conserving rare and unusual plants and animals
  • Inspiring and educating students by the thousands, instilling a lifelong curiosity and love of nature
  • Intentionally driving regional tourism by highlighting the natural beauty of Bernheim throughout the seasons and by creating unique art in nature experiences

Established in 1929 by bourbon magnate Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, Bernheim Forest and Arboretum opened to the public in 1950 with the belief and practice that nature should be accessible to all people, regardless of race, creed, or economic status. Millions of people from all 50 states and many countries have visited Bernheim over the years. Today, Bernheim welcomes more than 300,000 guests each year.

Scientific research shows time in nature is good for the physical and mental health of all ages. Our youngest guests discover nature-play via Playcosystem and the Children at Play Network (CAPN). Many connect with nature on our trails, viewing our natural areas, and by exploring our plant collections. As we celebrate 45 years of our Artists in Residence program, art continues to be a powerful source of inspiration for all visitors.  The additions of L+A+N+D: an experience of discovery and Heart of the Forest – Tin Man foster curiosity and reflection.

Thank you to all our patrons, members, volunteers, advocates, and donors. You help Bernheim deliver innovative programs, demonstrate best sustainable operational practices, create beautiful landscapes, and preserve and steward natural lands. Because of your support, Bernheim Forest and Arboretum works for the greater good found when people connect with nature!
