Exploring Friendship and Nature: A Recap of the Midweek Nature Stroll
by Kat Panther, Volunteer Naturalist
Rain and cold couldn’t dampen the spirits of this month’s Midweek Nature Stroll: Friendship Like the Holly Tree. On January 14, a group of intrepid hikers donned warm, waterproof clothing and set out to explore the Hubbuch Holly Collection.
We weren’t the only visitors to the hollies. Robins and cedar waxwings feasted on a vibrant buffet of bright red, orange, and yellow berries. Our mission? A holly tree treasure hunt. We navigated the maze of hollies in search of trees with unique histories and natural significance.
By the end of the trek, our group agreed: winter is a spectacular time to immerse yourself in the natural world and
our imagination.
You can explore the hidden wonders of Bernheim through the Midweek Nature Stroll series. Held on the second Wednesday of each month, these guided hikes are free and lead by Volunteer Naturalists, Kat Panther and Leslie Senn. Reserve your spot and join us for these upcoming events as we traverse the forest and arboretum:
- February 11 – Midweek Nature Stroll: Up, Up, and Away: Trek up Inspiration Knob to enjoy the view and explore the Arboretum’s early infrastructure, uncovering the history woven into the landscape.
