Thanks to the generous support of several charitable donors, Bernheim Forest & Arboretum now offers visitors an extraordinary way to explore nature through a unique, multisensory experience. The Sensory Garden, originally crafted to highlight the five senses—hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch—using an array of carefully selected plants, has been enhanced with an audible walking tour. Accessible through the Otocast audio application, this tour allows visitors to listen to recordings about eleven distinctive locations within the garden. By scanning a QR code on their smartphones, guests can learn about the interplay between the senses and the surrounding environment, as well as gain insights into native trees and other unique features. Additionally, Braille signage at each stopping point ensures that the experience is accessible to visually impaired visitors, making the garden a welcoming space for all.
The introduction of the Otocast system in the Sensory Garden exemplifies Bernheim Forest’s dedication to creating an inclusive and enriching environment. This new feature is a step forward in making the forest a place where people from all walks of life can connect with nature in meaningful ways. This technology not only enhances the visitor experience but also broadens the garden’s educational reach, offering a deeper understanding of the connections between the senses and the natural environment. The Sensory Garden now stands as a testament to how technology and nature can merge to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging space for all who visit.
Looking ahead, Bernheim Forest plans to expand the use of Otocast to other key areas, including Lake Nevin, The Edible Garden, and the latest immersive art experience, L+A+N+D. This expansion will further enrich the visitor experience, offering new ways to explore and learn about the forest’s diverse landscapes. The Sensory Garden Otocast Project has been made possible by the support of Families for Effective Autism Treatment, the Kentucky School for the Blind Charitable Foundation, Dreams With Wings, Art for All, The Crusade for Children, and Kosair Charities. Their contributions ensure that Bernheim Forest remains a place where everyone can experience the beauty and wonder of nature.
