KEEN on Nature: Bernheim Forest and KEEN Footwear’s neighborly partnership

By Lindsay Duncan

At Bernheim Forest, we believe in partnerships that make a lasting impact! Since 2019, KEEN Footwear has been one of those exceptional partners, bringing their passion for the outdoors and community stewardship to life right here in Kentucky.

A Natural Fit: KEEN & Bernheim

When KEEN opened its distribution center in Shepherdsville, Ky. in 2018—just 15 minutes from Bernheim— their partnership with Bernheim took root soon after. KEEN Footwear has long been a favorite brand among Bernheim staff for their comfort and durability in the outdoors. Not to mention, many of our visitors can be spotted wearing KEENs as they explore Bernheim. So, it’s no surprise that Bernheim has also become a favorite place for KEEN employees to volunteer.

One of KEEN’s standout commitments to sustainability and service is their generous policy of giving employees 40 hours of paid volunteer time annually. Many of them choose to spend that time at Bernheim, contributing to projects that enhance our trails, gardens, and educational spaces.

KEEN Volunteers in Action

One of the most memorable projects KEEN volunteers have supported was the Spirit Nest, built in 2022 with artist Jayson Fann. Volunteers collected driftwood from the Ohio River to help construct this large, treehouse-like sculpture. The Nest also includes eucalyptus wood—an invasive species from California—repurposed in a creative way. Now a centerpiece of our Playcosystem’s Adventure Play area, the Spirit Nest is used for storytelling, cultural events, and nature play.

KEEN volunteers have also played a vital role in maintaining the Edible Garden and helping with trail upkeep, ensuring that Bernheim remains a beautiful, welcoming space for all.

Expanding Impact: KEEN’s Support for Backside Learning Center

KEEN’s support doesn’t stop at volunteering. They also give generously to help build more inclusive communities. Each summer, KEEN funds a week-long nature camp at Bernheim for children from the Backside Learning Center (BLC), a nonprofit that serves families of workers at Churchill Downs.

KEEN covers camp tuition, transportation and provides each camper with a free pair of water shoes. This allows the children to safely explore creeks, play in the Playcosystem, and kayak on Lake Nevin—many experiencing these activities for the very first time.

Through hands-on nature experiences, these kids gain confidence, spark curiosity, and build lifelong connections to the natural world.

KEEN Gives Back for Earth Month 2025

This April, during Earth Month, KEEN Garage at the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass in Simpsonville, Ky., is donating 10% of sales to Bernheim. It’s a great time to upgrade your outdoor gear while supporting conservation and education.

Join us in celebrating this meaningful partnership—where community, nature, and a shared commitment to sustainability come together to make a difference.
