Don’t Put Away Your Shovels Just Yet!
As most gardeners know, fall is one of the best times of the year to plant! Cooler temperatures mean less stress on newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials, and you’ll typically use less water. Fall planting also gives plants time to establish their root systems and acclimate to their new soil before going dormant for the winter, so they’re ready to burst with life come spring.
This year, Bernheim’s Fall Plant Sale has some exciting new plants for your landscape. One standout perennial is Conoclinium coelestinum, commonly known as Blue Mistflower. This fantastic native produces beautiful blue-purple flowers and thrives in partial shade and medium to moist soils.
Looking for something a little different? Consider Ribes missouriense, or Missouri Gooseberry. This unique edible shrub provides interest in the landscape, attracts birds and butterflies, and produces edible fruit.
We will also have several interesting new conifers perfect for homeowners with smaller yards or anyone looking to add year-round interest to their landscape. One exciting selection is Thuja occidentalis, Full Speed A Hedge® American Pillar Arborvitae. This fast-growing arborvitae has a tall, narrow habit, making it an excellent specimen plant or a great option for creating privacy without taking up too much space.
Bernheim’s Fall Plant Sale will be held September 18 and 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Come out, explore our selection, and find something new for your garden! View the full Plant Sale List.
All proceeds from the plant sale help support Bernheim’s horticulture team and its ongoing work.
