Environmental Artist-in-Residence, Lili(ana), brings the next chapter of her project, Fore(st)sight to Bernheim

By Teresa Koester

Fore(st)sight is a collaborative project imagined by environmental artist, Lili(ana), transforming community-collected shredded bulk mail into a tree-form sculptural installation. The trees used as models for the sculpture are inspired by those from the hosting organization. Fore(st)sight draws attention to the significant environmental impact of bulk mail. Lili(ana) explains that the concept originated from her frustrations with the compulsory delivery of junk mail to her mailbox, despite her objections.

Out of feeling impotent and frustrated by this situation, I decided to save all the junk mail that I was receiving and create art with it,” Lili(ana) shared.

Why Is This Important?

Did you know?

  • Over 100 million trees’ worth of bulk mail arrives in American mailboxes each year—equivalent to deforesting the Rocky Mountain National Forest four times annually.
  • A typical mailbox receives over 40 pounds of bulk mail every year.
  • On average, 44% of paper bulk mail is discarded unopened.
  • It takes over 350,000 dump trucks and a significant amount of fuel to haul away non-recycled bulk mail each year.
  • More than $320 million in taxpayer dollars are spent annually just to dispose of bulk mail.

Important: Please remove or black out your address and name on each piece of mail before donating. All mail will be shredded before being transformed into the artwork.

Together, we can raise awareness and make a difference. Let’s turn something wasteful into something wonderful!
