Clubhouse and Sidewalk Additions to Playground

By Jenny Gardner

Bernheim’s natural playground is going through a growth spurt.

If you have visited this year, you may have noticed multiple construction projects happening on the eastern side of the playground. These projects are part of the full three-zone master plan for Playcosystem, which encompasses 17-acres. Designed in-house by the Children at Play Network (CAPN), Playcosystem highlights use of local materials and the amazing craftsmanship and hard work of the Bernheim operations team.

Recent additions to the playground include:

  • the Clubhouse
  • new sidewalks
  • gathering areas
  • a large sandpit

About the Clubhouse

The new Clubhouse tells a special story of the amazing, combined abilities and skills of those who work at Bernheim. Designed by the CAPN team, the Clubhouse uses wood from trees that blew over in last year’s windstorms. Bernheim’s operations team milled the fallen trees into the lumber and used it to construct this pavilion. Craftsmen on our team also created many of the intricate details, including the custom cedar handrails, steps, and playful hardscaping that connects the Clubhouse to the surrounding play environment.

The Clubhouse is a multi-use structure, serving as a daily gathering space and shelter from the elements. The pavilion also provides more space for programming and private events, including birthday parties. If you are interested in reserving the Clubhouse, complete the online form or email your request to rentals@bernheim.org.

New Pathways Improve Access for All.

New concrete sidewalks provide easier access to more areas of Playcosystem. Concrete pads for wheelchair-accessible picnic tables have been installed as well. These paths allow those using mobility devices to access the new sandpit from two locations. The sand can be reached from the top without crossing any barriers. A connected sand table at the lower side of the sandpit enables play right alongside other kids.

The mission of the CAPN is to connect children to nature through free play, and this means connecting ALL children to nature. By making Playcosystem more accessible, we can better fulfill this mission.

More exciting additions are still to come, so make sure to keep up with Playcosystem by following the Children at Play Network on Instagram and Facebook. And come visit! There’s always something new to see and a new way to play at Bernheim.
