By Bernheim
Spring is beginning to stir across the landscape at Bernheim, and a few early bloomers are already putting on a show. Our magnolia collection is starting to open, with several cultivars revealing those classic, oversized blossoms that always feel like the true beginning of the season.
Nearby, the Prunus sp. are joining in. Yoshino cherry and Japanese flowering cherry are beginning to bloom, bringing soft clouds of pink and white to the Arboretum. In sunnier pockets, wild daffodils have also appeared, adding bright yellow notes along roadsides and open edges.
Other signs of spring are just around the corner. Both Eastern redbuds (Cercis canadensis sp.) and Chinese redbuds (Cercis chinensis sp.) are beginning to form buds, hinting at the burst of magenta that will soon follow. Out in Bernheim’s natural areas, cutleaf toothwort (Cardamine concatenata), spring beauties (Claytonia), and trout lilies(Erythronium sp.) are starting to emerge from the forest floor. However, they haven’t quite reached flowering yet.
