Awaken Your Inner Child at Adult Day Camp

By Jonathan Shirley

Who Says Camp is Just for Kids?

Do you remember the joy of summer camp? Endless sunshine, exciting new friends, fun activities, and the spirited bliss of unlimited energy and pain-free knees? Afternoons spent splashing in the creek, creating simple works of art, and the reward of a refreshing snack in the shade of an old oak tree? Now you can recapture those childhood memories at Bernheim’s Adult Ecology Summer Camp on July 25!

In our busy adult lives, it is easy to overlook the importance of play while attempting to ensure our physical and mental well-being. Here at Bernheim Forest, we know the benefits of play aren’t just for kids! Time spent in nature reduces stress levels, improves sleep quality, lowers blood pressure, and results in a general sense of positivity that extends to every aspect of our lives. That’s good for all of us, no matter the age.

Bernheim’s Adult Day Camp is an immersive outdoor experience where we encourage the curiosity common in kids, but sometimes stifled by our careers and responsibilities. As you spend the day investigating a beaver lodge, hunting for hidden fossils on Rock Run, or watching a butterfly flutter by our beautiful native gardens, your inner child will remember that adventure waits behind every tree!

I attended the Adult Day Camp for the first time a few years ago, not knowing what to expect. My wife and I were intrigued by the concept, having lamented our perceived notion that “grown-ups” aren’t allowed to have fun anymore. How wrong we were! Within minutes of arriving, we were laughing and playing with strangers—fellow campers who quickly became friends under the kind encouragement of Bernheim staff and volunteers.

Kayaking on Lake Nevin during Adult Day Camp at Bernheim

This is an invaluable memory-making opportunity! You can expect to explore the lush green forest, kayak on the still waters of Lake Nevin, create a unique piece of keepsake art using natural materials, and more—all with the accompaniment of Naturalist interpreters eager to share their joy and wonder of the natural world with you. If you’re like me, there’s no better way to learn about the ecology of our region than to use all of your senses in active discovery!

So come on out, and bring your inner child! You won’t want to miss this chance to recall the magic of the summers of yesterday with your community of fellow nature lovers, while also supporting Bernheim Forest’s mission of connecting people with nature.

We are so grateful for your support, and I can’t wait to see you at camp!
