About the Artist
AKUNZO is an artist duo formed by Karola Pezarro and Aris de Bakker. Working collaboratively since 2014, their practice focuses on ephemeral installations that interact directly with the landscape. Using natural materials sourced from each site, AKUNZO creates works that explore humanity’s relationship to the natural world. Their projects highlight the link between art and the environment, adding a human element to the natural landscape.

Materials: American Beech branches, rebar
OXYGEN is a large-scale installation created from steel and American beech branches collected from Bernheim’s forest. The work forms the silhouette of a human face gazing upward toward the sky, emerging naturally from the landscape and tree line as viewers approach. Serving as a metaphor for humanity’s fragile relationship with nature, the piece emphasizes the essential role of oxygen in sustaining life. It brings attention to the growing threats to forests worldwide, while highlighting Bernheim as a protected space where the forest grows.
Location: Paul’s Point, at the top of Forest Hill Drive.
