About the Artist

Meg White, a self-taught sculptor from Silver Hills in New Albany, Indiana, first discovered her passion for three-dimensional work through paper sculpture. From 1987 to 1991, she worked as a freelance commercial artist, creating paper sculptures. Transitioning into stone sculpture, White created Emerging, a three-tiered limestone piece now at the heart of Bernheim’s Sensory Garden, donated in 1998 in memory of trustee Burt L. Monroe, Jr. Her work often explores themes of growth and transformation, as seen in Emerging and later in Discovery Muse in Orlando, Florida.

Material: Indiana limestone

Carved from Indiana limestone, Emerging depicts a figure gradually rising from within three-layered stone forms. Artist Meg White was inspired by the idea of leaving behind comfort and safety in order to grow. The sculpture captures the tension between protection and vulnerability, inviting viewers to reflect on the personal risks involved in reaching one’s full potential.

Location: Sensory Garden near the Education Center.
