2014 Artist in Residence
Materials: PVC pipe, screws
Atomic Apartment is dedicated to mason bees, solitary pollinators that nest in natural cavities like cracks in stones or holes in tree bark. Artist Sévryna Lupien designed this mid-century modern cloud form using varying lengths of PVC pipe to create a welcoming habitat for these important insects. The sculpture allows visitors to observe the bees both inside and outside the building. Unlike honeybees or bumblebees, mason bees do not produce honey or beeswax and rarely sting, making them safe and beneficial companions in the environment.
Location: Outside the Sassafras Room in the Visitor Center.
