The Beech Collection was started in 1954 with the planting of four cultivars of Fagus sylvatica (European Beech) and includes our native American Beech (Fagus grandifolia ). Additional trees have been added to this collection, over many years, which highlight some of the finest selections of this species available. While not indigenous to the United States, the European Beech grows well in our climate and represents the majority of unusual and distinct forms that are in cultivation in the nursery industry. Foliage varies greatly among these cultivars, ranging from purple to multi-colored, and forms vary from slender to pendulous, weeping, and contorted.
