Bernheim’s mission of connecting people with nature extends far beyond our forest boundaries.
Bernheim recently completed the installation of four rooftop gardens on the newly constructed University of Louisville Novak Center for Children’s Health in downtown Louisville. One level is a pollinator habitat, where children can watch butterflies and insects while receiving treatments. The other three beds are areas where families can spend time together – a sensory garden, a patio surrounded by native grasses, and a peaceful green space to enjoy the year-round beauty of trees, shrubs, and perennials in the middle of the city.
There are many benefits to green roofs – mitigating the urban heat island; saving on heating and cooling, improving air quality and more. While those benefits are invaluable, these rooftop gardens were specifically created to help improve the health and well-being of the center’s young patients. Studies show that patients with access to green spaces (even only visual access) have shorter healing times, increased success with medical treatments, and improved immune health.
