Bernheim’s Plant Nursery
The plant nursery, located on 40 acres at Bernheim’s Research Center, is the starting point of our collections. There, you will see where plants are grown for projects within the arboretum and beyond its borders. Plants are also evaluated and grown for sales and distribution. Currently, we are producing plants for green roof research and installation, planting within the surrounding communities, plant sales, and providing plants to the public that are often not seen in the nursery industry.
The nursery includes four propagation glasshouses and seven overwintering structures to include overwintering hoop houses and a heated double-poly house. The plant nursery also features seed drying and storage facilities, a pond that catches and recycles rain water into irrigation for the growing structures, the Kentucky Mesonet weather station, and a solar panel to help offset a portion of energy used in the propagation process.
Bernheim’s plant sale programs offer a variety of carefully chosen plants that perform well in Central Kentucky. Whether you shop at our two annual plant sales, at the Visitor’s Center, or reserve a hard-to-find specimen through our members-only Garden Connections program, you are sure to find something that works perfectly in your landscape. We offer trees, shrubs, perennials, and vines throughout the growing season at the Visitor’s Center. (March through December)
