Summer is the perfect time to get out and explore Bernheim. Every plant and animal living in the forest has a story to tell, and our Volunteer Naturalists are happy to share them. Now through September, don’t miss the opportunity to join in a guided hike, where you’ll experience the wonders of nature in a whole new light.
Through the end of June, bring your family out each Friday for Friday Forest Forays. These family-friendly adventures provide an engaging and multisensory way to learn more about Bernheim’s diverse plant and animal life during a short hike on the Bent Twig Trail, the Nursery Loop, or other trails near the Bernheim Visitor Center. The shorter length of these hikes makes them a great fit for families with children.
Beginning July 14, we’ll begin Mid-week Nature Walks each Wednesday, which are aimed at adults, but children six years and older are welcome. Summer mornings are often the coolest part of the day, and Bernheim is extra lovely in softer morning light. These hikes are led by Bernheim staff and Volunteer Naturalists who are passionate about revealing the stories of plants and animals that are often hidden in plain sight. Each hike reveals new surprises from the birds, blossoms, and butterflies. Dress for the weather and be prepared for venturing into places such as the Big Prairie, the Bent Twig Trail and areas around the Education Center where the trees and sensory garden have special stories and surprises.
